Affliction Warlock in 5.1

Affliction Warlock changes in 5.1

No huge changes for Afflic warlocks, aside from a bunch of alterations to Demonic Gateway, and some nerfs to Kil’Jaiden’s Cunning (which wasn’t our preferred Tier 6 talent anyway).

Affliction “Rotation” and Priorities

Affliction’s ability rotation has been considerably simplified in MoP, which is a bit of a relief. You’ll still need to keep track of multiple Damage Over Time spells, though – we recommend installing an addon like Need To Know to keep track of when your spells end.

Single-target DPS

Start out by casting Agony, Corruption and Unstable Afflication on your target.
  • Top Priority: If any of Agony, Corruption or Unstable Afflication are about to drop, re-cast them. It is particularly important not to let Agony drop.
  • Second Priority: If you have a Soul Shard or the Shadow Trance buff is currently active, cast Haunt.
  • Third Priority: If you don’t have anything else to do, cast Drain Soul if your target is below 20% health, or Malefic Grasp otherwise.
If you need to refresh any of your Damage Over Time spells when the target’s below 20%, just use Soulburn, then Soul Swap to refresh all three.
Above 20%, you may find it more convenient to use Fel Flames to refresh both Corruption and Unstable Affliction by 6 seconds.

AOE DPS

For 2 or 3 targets, Cast Soulburn then Soul Swap on each one to afflict them with Agony, Corruption and Unstable Affliction.
Then:
  • Top Priority: Keep all your DoTs running on all targets by using Soulburn->Soul Swap to refresh them.
  • Second Priority: Regenerate Soul Shards so you can keep Soulburning by using Drain Life.
  • Third Priority: If you have Shadow Trance, cast Haunt, otherwise cast Malefic Grasp.
Against 4 or more enemies, open with Soulburn followed by Seed Of Corruption, then attempt to use Soulburn->Soul Swap on as many targets as possible. If there are 5 or more, cast Rain of Fire too.
Affliction AOE has always been a bit tricky, and it continues to be so. If you’re new to multi-dotting, don’t worry if you don’t get it right straight away – practise makes perfect!

Cooldowns

  • Use Dark Soul: Misery whenever it’s available, unless Time Warp/Heroism/Bloodlust is running, in which case wait for that to end.
  • Use Summon Doomguard for single-target DPS and Summon Infernal for multi-target DPS. Use whichever is most appropriate whenever available.
  • Use Life Tap when you run low on mana.
  • Use Soulshatter to drop aggro from monsters attacking you. Particularly important before using Life Tap!
  • Unending Resolve reduces damage you take – particularly valuable if you’re on low life thanks to Life Tap.
  • Soulstone now functions as a combat resurrection – remember to use it if no-one else can combat res.

Buffs

Remember to summon a demon. If you’re using Grimoire of Sacrifice (see Talents) it doesn’t matter which one – otherwise, use Felhunter.
Remember to cast Dark Intent, and summon a Soulwell if your party or raid wants one! Also, if no-one else in your raid or party can do so, cast Curse of the Elements on important targets.

Affliction Warlock Talent Choices

As you get more experienced with these talents, and MoP progresses, you’ll probably change them on an encounter-by-encounter basis – but here’s a solid talent setup to start playing with:
  • Tier 1: Soul Leech – makes all your damage spells heal you (a bit).
  • Tier 2: Mortal Coil – gives you a self-heal spell.
  • Tier 3: Dark Bargain – gives you an 8-second 100% damage protection. Very useful!
  • Tier 4: Unbound Will – gives you a cooldown which removes movement impairing effects, mind control, and magic debuffs.
  • Tier 5: Grimoire of Sacrifice – Sacrifice your demon for a powerful 20-minute buff.
  • Tier 6: Archimonde’s Vengeance. Use it when you’ll be taking damage.

Stats, reforging and gemming for Affliction Warlock

Intellect is the most important stat for Affliction warlocks, with Hit to hit cap (15% / 5100 ) followed by Mastery as the most important secondary stats.
Reforging: Reforge to hit cap first (15% / 5100), then reforge to Mastery. Reforge from Hit over cap, then Crit first.
Gems: Use Brilliant gems in Red sockets, Veiled in Blue Sockets and Artful in Yellow sockets.
Meta Gem: Burning meta gem, whichever you can afford.
Note on Expertise: Expertise counts toward the Hit Cap, so if you can’t reforge to Hit, you can still reforge to Expertise.

Afflic Warlock Glyphs

A number of glyphs have situationally specific uses, but here’s a good no-downsides selection:
Major: Glyph of Soul Shards, Glyph of Soul Swap, Glyph of Siphon Life
Minor: Your choice. No real effects in DPS terms.

Affliction Warlock enchants and item enhancements

You should almost always use a profession enhancement item if it provides appropriate stats instead of a general enchant.
  • Shoulders – Greater Crane Wing Inscription
  • Back – Enchant Cloak – Superior Intellect
  • Chest – Enchant Chest – Glorious Stats
  • Wrist – Enchant Bracer – Super Intellect
  • Hands – Enchant Gloves – Superior Mastery or Superior Expertise
  • Belt – Living Steel Belt Buckle
  • Legs – Greater Cerulean Spellthread
  • Feet – Enchant Boots – Pandaren’s Step
  • Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Jade Spirit
  • Off-Hand Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Major Intellect

Resto Druid in WoW Patch 5.1

What’s that you say? We can have permanent tree form back again? WOOHOO! But that’s not the only change to Resto Druids in Mists of Pandaria and WoW’s Patch 5.1 – there’s the new talent system, new glyphs, and modified spells to take account of too. If you want to get healing without reading a wall of text, here’s our Quick Start guide to your play style, spells, stats, talent builds, glyphs, reforging and gemming and more in MoP.

Resto Druid Changes in WoW Patch 5.1

Er… Symbiosis’ cast time changed a bit? No, basically there are no changes.

Resto Healing “Rotation” and Priorities

The good news is that not that much has changed in MoP – indeed, you can probably jump right in and start healing without too many problems if you were playing a tree in Cataclysm.

Tank Healing As Resto

In general, you’ll want to keep Lifebloom at 3 stacks on the tank, use Rejuvenation on him or her too, and keep them topped up with Nourish in low-intensity phases and Healing Touch in high-intensity phases. Use Swiftmend whenever it’s off cooldown.
If it all goes pear-shaped, throw out at least one Regrowth for the buff, several if absolutely vital – but they’re expensive. Don’t run yourself out of mana overusing Healing Touch, or let the tank die by refusing to switch from Nourish to something bigger. For people used to Cataclysm, note that we have a lot less mana these days – you’ll want to prioritise cheaper spells.
Make sure you’re casting a direct heal (not a HOT) often enough to refresh Harmony – once every 20 sec, or watch your buff bar.

Raid Healing As Resto

Keep 3 stacks of Lifebloom ticking on the tank for the mana benefits. If several people take damage, use Wild Growth as the spell of choice. If it’s heavy damage, pop Tranquility, or if it’s not quite “argh we’re going to die” urgent, put a Rejuvenation on each of the injured people.
Otherwise, just keep using Wild Growth on cooldown to bring people back up.
Use Swiftmend on cooldown on the biggest group of injured people to pop Efflorescence, the AOE heal, and also to refresh your Mastery. Use Nourish to refresh the tank’s Lifebloom, and heal individual people with Nourish, Healing Touch or Regrowth in order from “meh” to “Yikes” levels of damage. Again, remember to cast a direct heal every 20 sec to refresh Harmony.
Our new Wild Mushrooms are unfortunately a bit of a pain to set up. If you have time to set them up, though, they can provide additional AOE healing.

Cooldowns

We have a new cooldown – Ironbark. Use it when a single player – usually the tank – is taking a lot of damage.
Don’t be afraid to use Incarnation: Tree of Life – its cooldown is fairly short. As mentioned above, use Tranquility if everyone’s taking heavy damage – it’s a very powerful spell. For real emergency moments, pop Tree then Tranq.
Other CDs: Nature’s Swiftness is an “emergency” heal. Use Innervate as soon as you hit 85% mana.

Buffs

Remember to cast Mark of the Wild if someone else isn’t providing a similar or better buff. Cast Symbiosis on one of the tanks if they don’t have it already, and otherwise on a Mage, Monk or DK. Remember to use the ability it grants you in return!

Restoration Druid Talent Choices

The new talent system is very flexible, so you should experiment with your choices – although for Resto Druids, there’s arguably less choice than for other classes.
If you want to get started with a simple, solid talent build, we recommend:
  • Tier 1: Feline Swiftness
  • Tier 2: Nature’s Swiftness
  • Tier 3: Typhoon
  • Tier 4: Incarnation
  • Tier 5: Mighty Bash
  • Tier 6: Heart of the Wild – mostly for the strong passive buff.

Stats, reforging and gemming for Restoration Druid

Intellect is still our most important stat, but after that, Spirit is probably our most important stat now. You won’t be able to get away with Cataclysm reforging here – a re-working is in order.
If you are close to the Haste Caps (2004 and 3043, assuming you regularly raid with a Moonkin, Elemental Shaman or Shadow Priest, otherwise 4229 and 5320), it’s very advantageous to reach these. After that, Mastery is the best healing output stat.
Reforging: First, reforge any and all stats to Spirit, starting with Crit, until you’re comfortable with your mana regen. After that, if you can get to a Haste cap, reforge Mastery and Crit to Haste, then reforge anything left over to Mastery.
Gems: Use a Brilliant gem (or Sparkling gem if you need more Spirit) in all sockets. If you can gain 20 INt or more with one non-red socket, or you are close to a Haste Cap, use Purified, Artful, or Reckless gems.
Meta Gem “Revitalizing” meta gems are the best choice in the early stages of the expansion.

Resto Druid Glyphs

Most Major Glyphs are now very situational, so choose the ones that benefit your play style.
Major: Glyph of Lifebloom, Glyph of Regrowth and Glyph of Healing Touch are all good choices. Glyph of Rejuvenation is very helpful if you’re struggling for mana. Glyph of Wild Growth is useful in 25-man.
Minor: Your choice. Although Glyph Of The Treant lets you be a tree again full time!

Restoration Druid enchants and item enhancements

You should almost always use a profession enhancement item if it provides appropriate stats instead of a general enchant – Inscription of the Earth Prince on shoulders from Inscription, for example.
  • Shoulders – Greater Crane Wing Inscription
  • Back – Enchant Cloak – Superior Intellect
  • Chest – Enchant Chest – Mighty Spirit
  • Wrist – Enchant Bracer – Super Intellect
  • Hands – Enchant Gloves – Superior Mastery or Enchant Gloves – Greater Haste
  • Belt – Living Steel Belt Buckle
  • Legs – Greater Pearlescent Spellthread
  • Feet – Enchant Boots – Pandaren’s Step
  • Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Jade Spirit
  • Off-Hand Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Major Intellect

Balance Druid changes in WoW Patch 5.1

Balance Druid changes in WoW Patch 5.1

Very few. However, theorycrafting has improved somewhat and this guide has had minor updates accordingly.
Balance “Rotation” and Priorities

The Balance rotation hasn’t really changed in MoP – it’s still all about keeping your Damage over Time spells up whilst getting in and out of Eclipse as fast as possible.
Single-target DPS

If possible, before combat begins use Astral Communion to move your Eclipse bar to one cast away from an Eclipse. Once combat has begun:
  • Top Priority: If Sunfire or Moonfire isn’t running on your target, cast it.
  • Second Priority: If Starsurge is available, cast it. If you’re in Lunar Eclipse and Starfall is available, cast that.
  • Third Priority: If you have the Solar Eclipse buff active, cast Wrath. If you have Lunar Eclipse, cast Starfire.
  • Fourth Priority: If your eclipse gauge is heading for Solar, cast Starfire. If it’s heading for Lunar, cast Wrath.
This will get you going with Balance DPS. To improve your DPS more, focus on keeping your Sunfire and Moonfire active at all times, and try to cast both of them at the start and end of the appropriate Eclipse (Solar for Sunfire, Lunar for Moonfire).

SIMPLE AOE DPS

Drop Wild Mushrooms before the pull, if possible, then simply spam Hurricane or Astral Storm on the pack.

ADVANCED AOE DPS

In AoE situations, you will want to start in Eclipse (Solar) and only use Wild Mushroom + Wild Mushroom: Detonate if you are able to pre-plant them before the pull.
  • With 2-3 targets, apply Sunfire and Moonfire to all mobs and then continue with the single-target rotation on the highest health target.
  • At 4-5 mobs, cast Starfall on cooldown and spam Sunfirewith Lunar Shower. At 6-8 targets, only apply Sunfire to targets and channel Hurricane.
  • At > 8 targets, simply channel Hurricane.
If you need to AoE in Eclipse (Lunar), cast Starfall on cooldown and channel Astral Storm.

Cooldowns

Use Celestial Alignment as often as possible, immediately after leaving an Eclipse.
Rebirth is still important – make sure to have it bound for a combat res!
Innervate is still a decent mana regeneration cooldown. Use it as soon as you get below 80% mana. With the Glyph, also provides some benefit if cast on others.
Don’t forget Barkskin if something’s attacking you.

Buffs

Remember to cast Mark of the Wild for the party or raid! Cast Symbiosis on a Mage if you can, and use Mirror Images on cooldown.
Also, Moonkin form. Remember to be in it. Seriously, I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen someone forget!

Balance Druid Talent Choices

Many Balance druid talent choices aren’t too relevant in 5.0 – although you’ll probably want to try out several choices for Tiers 2 and 4 in time. However, this is a good, easy-to-use talent build for now:
Tier 1: Feline Swiftness
Tier 2: Nature’s Swiftness – particularly useful for the instant, potent Rebirth.
Tier 3: Faerie Swarm
Tier 4: Incarnation – gives an additional damage cooldown. Use with Nature’s Vigil, on cooldown.
Tier 5: Mighty Bash.
Tier 6: Nature’s Vigil – gives an additional damage cooldown. Use with Incarnation, on cooldown.

Stats, reforging and gemming for Balance Druid

Intellect is still our most important stat, followed by Hit or Spirit to the cap (15% or 5100 rating), followed by Haste to the 5,273 breakpoint, then Critical Strike, followed by Haste and Mastery.
Reforging: Reforge for Spirit to hit cap, then for Haste until you reach 5,273 Haste, then Crit Strike. Reforge out of Hit above the cap first, then Spirit, then Haste and Mastery.
Gems: Use a Brilliant Inferno Ruby in Red sockets. in Blue sockets, use Purified gems (Int/Spirit) and use Potent gems (Int/Crit) in Yellow sockets.
Meta Gem: Burning meta gem.

Boomkin Glyphs

No Boomkin glyphs have particularly massive effects.
Major: Glyph of the Moonbeast, Glyph of Rebirth, Glyph of Innervate
Minor: Glyph of Grace

Balance Druid enchants and item enhancements

You should almost always use a profession enhancement item if it provides appropriate stats instead of a general enchant.
Shoulders – Greater Crane Wing Inscription
Back – Enchant Cloak – Superior Intellect
Chest – Enchant Chest – Glorious Stats
Wrist – Enchant Bracer – Super Intellect
Hands – Enchant Gloves – Superior Mastery
Belt – Living Steel Belt Buckle
Legs – Greater Cerulean Spellthread
Feet – Enchant Boots – Pandaren’s Step
Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Jade Spirit
Off-Hand Weapon – Enchant Weapon – Major Intellect
